History
The conquest of Vietnam by France began in 1858 and was completed by 1884. It became part of French Indochina in 1887. Vietnam declared independence after World War II, but France continued to rule until its 1954 defeat by Communist forces under Ho Chi Minh. Under the Geneva Accords of 1954, Vietnam was divided into the Communist North and anti-Communist South. US economic and military aid to South Vietnam grew through the 1960s in an attempt to bolster the government, but US armed forces were withdrawn following a cease-fire agreement in 1973. Two years later, North Vietnamese forces overran the South reuniting the country.

Getting There
Citizens of most countries need a Visa to enter Vietnam. If you are a citizen of a Nordic country, a country member of ASEAN, or Japan, then you are lucky. Citizens from these countries are allowed to stay in Vietnam for 15 days without a Visa. The only requirement is that you can show a return ticket (within these 15 days) when you enter Vietnam. For all the rest, you need to arrange a Visa before you arrive to Vietnam. You can get a landing Visa, but this requires an approval letter that travel agents can help you with, but again before you make you trip to Vietnam.
Air
Vietnam's international airports are located in the three biggest cities Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. Long distance flights often transit in Bangkok, Singapore or Taipei, but recently direct flight services have been launched to Australia, France, and Germany. There are also direct flights from other Asian countries like Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. Low cost airlines fly to Singapore and Thailand.
